An entire neighborhood is being demolished to make way for "progress" consisting of a large corporate development. Even though the bulldozers are ready to knock the tenement building down, the eccentric residents refuse to be evicted. When money and talk continue to fail, the Developer (Micheal Greene) hires a local thug (Micheal Carmine) who resorts to violent tactics and it's almost the end of the residents as well as the building. Although an elderly couple (Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy), and three other stubborn occupants (Dennis Boutsikaris, Marisa Esteval, and Frank McRae) attempt to fight back, it appears a lost cause. But then, suddenly, the tenants receive help from a most unusual source.
