College professor Andy Safian (Bill Pullman) believes he has a perfect life. He and his wife, Tracy (Nicole Kidman), are seemingly happily married and trying to have a child. They take on a tenant, surgeon Dr. Jed Hill (Alec Baldwin), who Andy befriends but Tracy insists she doesn’t like. One day, Tracy is rushed to the hospital where Jed performs surgery on her. He removes both of her ovaries after one is unhealthy and Tracy has a miscarriage. When Tracy wakes up she is as devastated as Andy at the news that she will never be able to have a baby. She leaves Andy and sues Jed for millions after it is revealed he has a “God complex”. Andy’s friend, Detective Dana Harris (Bebe Neuwirth), has to investigate Andy for an unrelated crime and has some shocking news for him, he is sterile. This sends Andy into a spiraling investigation of Tracy that leads to surprising betrayal, blackmail and murder.
