“Playing by Heart” (1998) follows the happenings in the love lives of people in Los Angeles. Mark (Jay Mohr) is dying of AIDS and when his mother comes stay with him, they must speak honestly with one another for the first time. Joan (Angelina Jolie) attempts to seduce Keenan with her charms, but cannot figure out why he is so reluctant to love. Hannah (Gina Rowlands) and the producer of her cooking show, Paul (Sean Connery) must move into emotional territory when Hannah wants to know about a love affair Paul had in his youth. Meredith (Gillian Anderson) has always been burned by men, so when Trent comes along, Meredith assumes he is no different and rebuffs his persistent advances. Hugh (Dennis Quaid) likes to tell tragic stories to strangers, always women, in bars. And, a couple who meets in hotels for sex comes to a turning point when the female is unwilling to take the relationship further. The complex stories of these strangers converge.
