In this sentimental film adaptation of the popular Broadway play from the 1960's, a rural hick named Claude Hooper Bukowski (John Savage) has been drafted to serve and die in Vietnam. On his way, he meets a group of New York hippies led by George Burger (Treat Williams) who turn him on to alternative ways of looking at his role in society. The movie raises some issues that may have been implied in the more free-form play, and significantly simplifies the plot for a more mainstream audience. There is a small amount of nudity, and a great deal of drug culture represented with positive overtones. The orchestrated music is derived from the original, and includes a stellar performance of "White Boys" by the late great Nell Carter in one of her earliest screen appearances. Anti-war activists and history buffs will enjoy the ample references to the political turmoil of the times.
