Pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad (Rikki Lake) dreams of being a dancer on a local Baltimore television station's teen dance program. Finally after many tries, she becomes a regular on the Corny Collins Dance Show. Grabbing the attention that the show affords her, Tracy and her mother (Divine) start to use Tracy’s fame to speak out for the social causes of the day -- most especially racial integration in Baltimore. In doing so, Tracy earns the wrath of the former star of the show, Amber Von Tussle (Colleen Fitzpatrick) as well as Amber's pro-segregation parents, Franklin (Sonny Bono) and Velma (Debbie Harry). The rivalry comes to a head as all of Baltimore watches Amber and Tracy vie in a dance-off for the title of Baltimore's Miss Auto Show 1963.
