John Kimble (Arnold Schwarznegger) is a hardened police detective who has been trying to catch a notorious drug dealer, Cullen Crisp (Richard Tyson) for years. After he finally catches Crisp, the one witness they have found is unreliable, so Kimble is sent undercover to a small town in Oregon to try to find Crisp’s ex-wife, to try to get her to testify against the dealer. When Kimble’s partner falls ill, he is forced to pretend to be an elementary school teacher, despite having no teaching experience. The experience is stressful for him, but eventually using a combination of tactics, including his police training classes and his tame Ferret, he establishes a good rapport with the pupils. When he meets the mother of one of his students, Joyce (Penelope Ann Miller) he feels an immediate connection, before realising that she and the woman he has been sent to find are one and the same, and he must try to persuade her to help him put her ex-husband behind bars.
