D. A.R. Y.L. is an escapee from a military experiment. Someone helps the child escape from dark forces. Looking frail, sensitive, and lost, Daryl (Barret Oliver) is taken in by a childless couple. The Richardsons (Mary Beth Hurt and Michael McKean) feel they can help this apparently abused child recover his memory and normality. But, along the way, even with the intervention of his friend named Turtle, Daryl proves to be a savant with amazing abilities in terms of his computer finesse. He can also master baseball instantly, but seems unable to master human affect. When it is revealed he is a refugee from a military experiment, the android child becomes a Pinocchio, wanting to be a real child. Yet, forces from the secret group, under the leadership of Dr Stewart (Josef Sommer) must de-activate the experiment gone awry. Along the way, Dr. Stewart comes to think of Daryl as real and understands how the family experience has improved him. He too decides to disobey orders and not have Daryl destroyed, despite bureaucratic orders. The story must climax with Stewart aiding Daryl, seeing that he should be rightfully placed with the foster parents to be given a human life.
