Set during the Revolutionary War, the film follows the misfortunes of New York fur trapper Tom Dobb (Al Pacino) as he tries to survive the turmoil of the war and the displacement that it causes for those in his station of society. When the evil Major Peasy (Donald Sutherland) forces Tom’s teenage son Ned to join the Continental Army, Ned sets out to get his son back. Initially ambivalent about the fight for freedom Ned has a change of heart and becomes fully committed to the patriot cause.
