The race of man has just recently started exploration of space, still naive about most of the alien races which exist. Unfortunately, their ignorance leads to tragedy during an attempt to make first contact with the advanced and deeply religious Minbari race. When the Earth and Minbari ships first meet, the Earth vessel's primitive electronics are overwhelmed by the Minbari sensors. Due to a desire to approach the humans with gun ports open as a sign of respect, the Minbari further aggravate the situation. Misinterpreting the gesture and with a crippled ship, the human captain orders his own crew to fire, catching the Minbari vessel off guard and badly damaging it. As a result, the Minbari religious leader who was aboard, Dukhat, is killed, sparking a holy war of retribution. What follows is not so much a war as an extermination, as the badly outmatched human forces bravely fight the angry Minbari. Is this the end for the human race, or will fate somehow intervene?
