Frannie (Meg Ryan) is a lonely, repressed English professor who compensates for her dull life by researching the gritty underbelly of society with the help of her students, like the streetwise Cornelius (Sharrieff Pugh). When a young woman is murdered in her neighborhood, Frannie absorbs herself into the killer's world by becoming both key witness and potential target. As the case unfolds, Frannie finds herself attracted to the mysterious and handsome police detective Malloy (Mark Ruffalo), and the two embark on a steamy sexual affair despite their mistrust for each other. Frannie's mistrust turns to fear as she hunts for clues on her own and finds that no man, not even Malloy, Cornelius, or her ex-boyfriend John (Kevin Bacon), is above suspicion.
