Coleman Silk (Anthony Hopkins) has been hiding a huge secret all his life. A secret that will someday shatter his current life if found out. Silk is a highly esteemed college professor until a seemingly innocent remark brings a huge backlash and results in his forced retirement. Depressed and extremely upset, Silk continues to keep his secret, even if revealing it could have saved his career. The only thing bringing him some happiness is the affair he is having with a younger woman (Nicole Kidman) who is also very troubled. After their death in a terrible car accident, a writer (Gary Sinise) who has been attempting to write Silk's biography, uncovers the big secret.
