The British Colonies are on the brink of revolution. A South Carolina farmer, Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) staunchly refuses to put his livelihood and family in danger by joining the militia. Despite his warnings, Benjamin's sons, Gabriel (Heath Ledger) and Thomas (Gregory Smith) sign on as soldiers. Colonel Tavington (Jason Isaacs), a British solider with an axe to grind with Benjamin, soon captures Gabriel and sentences him to hang. Thomas tries to free his brother and is killed in the process. To avenge his son's death and protect his remaining children, Benjamin must put aside his fears and join the fight for freedom and face his anxiety about his own savagery.
