On the Western front of World War I, Baron Manfred von Richthofen (Matthias Schweighöfer) is a celebrated hero and air ace of the Imperial German Army Air Service. While being torn ethically between the continuing slaughter on the battlefield below and the heroic dog fights in the clouds, Richthofen becomes a pawn of both his fame and the German propaganda machine. A growing romance with the attractive nurse Käte (Lena Headey) gives Richthofen another dilemma: will he take the opportunity to escape the bloodbath above the trenches with Käte, or will he return to the fight against his respected rival, RAF Captain Roy Brown (Joseph Fiennes)?
