Young Guns II picks up the story of William H. Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid (Emilio Estevez), and two other remaining Regulators: Doc Scurlock (Kiefer Sutherland) and Jose Chavez y Chavez (Lou Diamond Phillips) after warrants are issued for their arrest for their participation in the Lincoln County Wars. The trio and some new compatriots are pursued by Pat Garrett (William Petersen), the man historically credited with having shot and killed Bonney. Billy and his gang are caught or killed one by one, with Billy finally being caught alone and unarmed by Garrett, and subsequently is sentenced to death by hanging. The ending is left ambiguous, with Garrett apparently shooting Bonney in the back during an escape attempt. However, Garrett finds in the morning that both his horse, and Bonney's corpse, are gone. The story is told mostly in flashback style from the point of view of Brushy Bill Roberts, a man who, in the 1940s, claimed that he was, in fact, Billy the Kid.
