Deloris Van Cartier (Whoopi Goldberg), now starring in a musical, returns to the convent when she learns that Mother Superior is having problems. Reassuming her character of Sister Mary Clarence, Deloris becomes the music teacher at the convent school. The kids are bummed out and unruly, but with Deloris' help they fix up the old music room and become a choir. While cleaning the sisters find memorabilia showing that the convent choir had once won awards at state competitions. Deloris and her choir decide to enter this years' contest in an attempt to save the convent school from closing. Midstream the school board discovers that Sister Mary Clarence isn't who she appears to be and tries to stop the choir from performing. The choir takes off for Los Angeles anyway with a group of irate priests on their tail. Although the priests have a soft spot for the choir, Mr. Crisp (James Coburn), the head of the school board, is determined to shut them down. Father Thomas (Brad Sullivan) locks Mr. Crisp in a closet in order to give the choir the opportunity to perform.
