As the story opens Hung Hei-Kwun (Jet Li) returns to his village and finds it has been the object of a brutal government raid. The only person left alive is Hung's small son, Mang Ting (Miu Tse). At this point the most famous scenes from this movie takes place, “the test of destiny.” Hung asks his child to choose between a sword, which would mean going with his father to avenge the villagers, or a toy, which would mean the boy's death. The boy chooses the sword. Although much of the action takes place years later when Man Ting is a young man, there is a crucial scene in the beginning in which Hung encounters Ma Ling-Yee (Chuen-Hua Chi), whom he thought his friend but who turns out to be an enemy, because there's a bounty for killing the last villager and he wants to collect it. At the end of this scene Hung and the audience thinks Ma Ling is dead, but Hung and his now grown son encounter him again many years later.
